Simmons Cribs

Simmons cribs have been a mainstay of the American nursery for decades. Their line of well-made and fashionable Simmons cribs were sold through leading retailers throughout the U.S., including Sears. In July of 2004, the Simmons Juvenile Furniture company was acquired in a merger by the Simmons Bedding Company. A few weeks later, a widely read newsletter for parents reported:

"Simmons said it was shuttering its Wisconsin plant that makes all Simmons wood furniture, blaming high labor costs and Chinese imports. So that ends Simmons cribs and furniture - they will no longer be made."

To paraphrase Mark Twain, the reports of its death were a bit premature. In April 2005, Simmons Bedding Company announced the launch of its new parent and kid friendly web site to promote healthy sleep in children, and in May, the launch of its new line of  mattresses designed specifically for children and babies. Simmons Kids, a division of Simmons Bedding Company, features 7 collections of baby furniture, including Simmons cribs in their Simmons Baby Furniture line.

The new lines of Simmons cribs feature beautifully detailed European styling and are matched to entire lines of furniture that is designed to be a mainstay of your child's room as he outgrows his nursery. Several Simmons cribs are 3-in-1 designs, created to become toddler and then youth beds as your child grows out of the crib.

The new lines of Simmons cribs are fashionable with a timeless sense of classic styling. The Chateau collection, for example, features a Simmons crib in warm golden pecan finish with the gentle arches and delicately carved details of a classic sleigh bed. It's a Crib 'n' More, one of Simmons 3-in-1 cribs that becomes a toddler bed and finally a full size bed.

Another of their offerings, the Highland Park collection, features natural northern Maple in clean, contemporary lines that suit any nursery decor from Mickey and Minnie Mouse to Laura Ashley. The Highland Parks Simmons crib is another Crib 'n' more that grows into a day bed, and includes an optional under-bed drawer for easy storage.

A personal favorite (and one that makes me wish I was decorating a nursery just so I could have it in my house) is the sophisticated design of the Cambridge collection. It's a Simmons crib with traditional Mediterranean styling - but the furniture line that matches has a unique twist. Curtains in the windows of the armoire and changing table lighten the heavy feel of classic Mediterranean styling with a touch of rustic country charm.

Whether you choose Simmons cribs with clean Scandinavian lines (the Scandia collection) or sturdy and elegant English styling (the Sand Hill collection) or any one of their other lines of baby furniture, Simmons cribs are an investment for a lifetime. And far from finished.
