Nursery ideas and tips to help with planning your nursery

Plan well and you will have a beautiful nursery

Your nursery is a place that should feel good not only for your baby but also for yourself as well. When considering different ideas for your nursery it is worthwhile taking into account the fact that your baby won’t always be a baby and within only a few years your little one will have outgrown most of the baby products you have purchased.

This guide will provide you with a few nursery ideas to help with planning your nursery.

By the time you have purchased everything you need for your nursery, you may find that you are well out of pocket so plan ahead and decide which are the essential items required for your nursery and buy these first. This way, you will at least have the basics for when the baby is born. The most important items for the nursery will include the crib, changing table, crib bedding and storage areas such as a dresser, hutch or chest.

A great idea and a way of saving money is to buy a convertible crib. These cribs adjust as the child grows eventually turning into a full size bed that can last until the child leaves school. You can also purchase changing tables that can be converted to a dresser once your baby has outgrown diapers.

Once you have purchased the essentials you can decide which items you would like to have but aren’t essential. These are the little added extras that help to brighten up the nursery like mobiles, wall hangings, pictures and wall-paper trim. This group of items are those that can be done without but will add to the enjoyment of the nursery just a little more.

Some other nursery ideas and things to consider when planning a nursery include:

  • Ensuring there is a place where you can sit to nurse the baby
  • Allowing enough storage space – remember you will not only have baby clothes but diapers and extra crib bedding to store
  • Consider the lighting in the nursery. At different times of the day more light may come through than at other times of the day. You will not want to place the baby’s crib where it will stand in the hot sun
  • Start with a theme and stick to it – this will make your purchases that much easier.
  • Make sure blind cords and curtains are nowhere near the crib.
  • Make sure the crib is not placed near a window.
  • Place socket protectors in electrical sockets.
  • Install a baby monitor so that you are aware of when your baby wakes if you are in another part of the house.
  • A playpen is a useful item to keep a mobile baby in. Add some toys for baby to play with.  A playpen can also be used to air clothing when not in use.
