The world of nursery designs

Nursery designs have come a long way, baby. Once a walk through the nursery bedding and accessories aisle was a wander through puffy clouds and fluffy sheep, little duckies and winking, kindly moons. The world of the nursery was pastel, the patterns sentimental and the overall themes almost cloyingly sweet.

Not anymore. While there's no lack of traditional baby styles among modern nursery designs, there's also every indication that nursery designs have come of age. Pastels are certainly still in evidence, but today's nursery might just as easily be done in bright primary colors, or the muted tones of sage and taupe and berry. And while there are teddy bears and fluffy bunnies aplenty for the fans of traditional nursery designs, you'll also find such whimsical - but very sophisticated - patterns as Banana Fish's  'Horsin' Around' bedding set. Styled for either a boy or a girl, the set combines both blue and red gingham checks with a funky black and white that looks like an Appaloosa pony's spotted coat and blue cambric embroidered with lassos and cowboy hats. While there's no doubt it's meant for the nursery, the design is sophisticated enough to easily move on with the little guy (or lucky girl) when he's ready to move out of the crib.

That seems to be a hallmark of the new look in nursery designs. Transportation from Terra Sutta, another nursery design for the new little guy in your family, combines a neat blue and white pinstripe with a large, bright plaid and a border of cars and boats and planes on pure white. There's nothing frilly or ruffly about it, and when the little guy outgrows his crib, the design easily works into a toddler's and even preschooler's room - with nothing more than tucking away the crib bumper pads.

One of the most stunning nursery designs around is Chloe Baby from California Kids. A simple patchwork quilted design in shimmering, elegant crushed velvets and moirés, the timeless elegance of the styling and the subtle shadings of peach, ice blue, cream and mocha turn this baby nursery design into the kind of style that Mom will want in her own room.

If you're looking for nursery designs that are a little off center, a little sophisticated, beautifully created and definitely out of the ordinary, these designers approach the nursery with kidlike enthusiasm and a very definite grownup sense of style"

Doodlefish Crib features nursery designs with bold stripes, big blocks and whimsical animals and toys. The unusual color combinations and prints make Doodlefish an excellent choice for an offbeat nursery that's still a kid's room.

Petit Boudoir uses vintage style fabrics in combinations with prints and solids to create a unique, old-fashioned line of nursery designs with a decidedly modern slant.

Blue Moon twists classic baby motifs like rubber duckies by coupling them with unusual fabrics like chenille and terrycloth. Bold, bright and whimsical, their nursery designs are perfect for the traditionalist with a taste for something just a little different.
