Baby jogger strollers: A buyer's guide

Tips to help you with purchasing a jogging stroller

Baby jogger strollers are a relatively new product to the world of strollers.  With parents wanting to stay active after the birth of a child, the jogging stroller has meant that they can get out and about and maintain their energetic lifestyle.

With the range of jogger strollers on the market today, the difficulty is deciding just which stroller is the best for you. This guide will provide you with a few tips to help with your decision-making.

  1. The larger the wheels the rougher the terrain it can cover. The larger wheels are recommended for when you are out and about jogging with the smaller recommended for smoother terrains and shopping. The standard sizes for jogging stroller wheels appear to be 12 inch, 16 inch and 20 inch. The 20 inch will provide for a smoother ride but it will also be a little heavier to carry and to maneuver in tight situations. The 12 inch is suitable for those who only want to use the stroller while out shopping or on relatively smooth surfaces. The 16 inch is probably a good medium for most people.
  2. Baby joggers are generally not suited for babies under six months as their neck muscles are not developed enough to handle the rougher terrains.
  3. Adjustable handles are a good option. If you know that both you and your partner will be using the jogging stroller and both are different heights then adjustable handles will be greatly appreciated.
  4. Optional extras such as cup holders are really just a bonus unless you feel that you really need it. But remember, added extras will almost always add to the price of the stroller.
  5. Look for a stroller with a five point safety harness as this will provide the greatest protection for your baby.
  6. Choose a baby jogger with a sunshade or canopy as you will most likely be out in the sunshine when using a jogging stroller and you don’t want your baby to get sun burnt. Remember also that your baby will most likely feel the full brunt of the wind rushing towards them particularly if you are jogging so choose a canopy that will also provide wind protection. A clear canopy will allow your baby to survey the world around them if the stroller is facing away from you, and if you have the stroller facing towards you, a clear canopy will allow you to keep an eye on your baby.
